How Georgia shaped the fictional battlefield, what Potato and Overkill modes mean, and how BULKHEAD is targeting smooth large-scale performance.

A grounded world inspired by Georgia

BULKHEAD wanted an Eastern European tone that felt familiar without falling back on a generic setting. The world also needed to support WARDOGS' fictional conflict between three private military factions fighting for cash, influence and control.

The team chose Georgia as its main real-world reference and travelled there to gather material that satellite imagery could not provide. The video highlights:

  • Tbilisi's mix of modern and historic architecture.
  • Chiatura's mining history, industrial spaces and relationship between abandoned infrastructure and residential areas.
  • Rusted train cars reused as sheds.
  • Apartment blocks, churches, factories, houses and a swimming pool that informed locations visible in the game.
  • Rural terrain and settlements outside the largest cities.

WARDOGS remains fictional. The trip supplied architectural, terrain and cultural reference rather than turning the game map into a one-to-one recreation of Georgia.

Why performance is part of the design

WARDOGS combines up to 100 players, a moving objective that drives players together, vehicles, infantry, dynamic construction and a large destructible environment. Unlike a battle royale where the player count naturally falls during a match, its core mode is intended to keep pressure concentrated for the full server session.

BULKHEAD says optimization began at the start of development, with server performance treated as an early bottleneck rather than a task left for the end. The studio describes 60 FPS as the minimum acceptable foundation, not its aspirational high-end result. It also says the announced release timing was moved forward only after internal minimum performance targets were reached.

That does not mean unlimited frame rates. The video explicitly warns players not to expect 240 FPS natively at 1440p on the highest settings in a game of this scale. Hardware, graphics options, upscaling, crowded combat and later development changes will all affect results.

Potato Mode

Potato Mode is the low-end graphics approach shown in the debrief. BULKHEAD says it bought an ordinary gaming PC around three years earlier with an Intel Core i5-8600 and Nvidia GTX 1660, then required the team to keep testing on it while pursuing 60 FPS at the lowest settings.

The video says the build is close to that target at native resolution and surpasses it with upscaling. Those components match the currently published minimum specification, which targets 1080p Low at 60+ FPS. See release status, playtests and PC requirements for the complete current table.

Potato Mode should be understood as a deliberately scalable presentation, not a promise that every scene and every similarly named PC configuration will hold an identical frame rate.

Overkill Mode

At the other end is Overkill Mode, a preset that pushes WARDOGS toward its highest visual fidelity. BULKHEAD says it plans to reserve this option for capable high-end PCs at launch and to hide it from unsupported systems so players do not accidentally select a preset their hardware cannot handle.

The video specifically describes availability for 40-series cards and above. It does not publish a complete CPU, memory, resolution or AMD-equivalent requirement for Overkill Mode, so those details should remain unconfirmed until BULKHEAD provides a final specification.

How the game is being optimized

BULKHEAD groups its optimization work into three pillars:

  1. Client performance - the work required to render and simulate the player's view smoothly.
  2. Visuals - retaining the detail that matters while spending less on things the player is unlikely to notice.
  3. Networking - making the large player count and responsive combat reliable; BULKHEAD says this will receive its own future video.

Examples discussed in the debrief include measuring real bottlenecks, reducing distant movement and animation update rates, making small fidelity reductions, balancing traditional trim-sheet techniques with Unreal Engine 5 Nanite, and continuously checking every gameplay system rather than searching for one late miracle fix.

The stated priority is consistent smooth performance over a higher number interrupted by stutters. Visual fidelity is added after the performance budget is understood, and the developers say optimization work is still continuing.

What playtest feedback does and does not prove

BULKHEAD says playtesters across a range of hardware have often been pleasantly surprised by current performance. That is encouraging developer-reported feedback, but it is not an independent benchmark and does not replace final testing on the public Early Access build.

The current safe preparation steps are:

  • Compare your PC with the official Steam requirements.
  • Expect crowded objectives, construction, destruction and vehicles to be the demanding case.
  • Use the available graphics presets and upscaling instead of assuming maximum settings.
  • Wait for public benchmarks before purchasing hardware specifically for WARDOGS.
  • Use the official playtest signup and wishlist the game on Steam if you want a chance to test it before release.
